The top-70 in the current Fed-Ex Cup standings arrive in Crooked Stick Golf Club, Indiana for the renewal of the ever-popular BMW Championship. As usual, Sky Sports screen all four days live and we give our views on a worthwhile punt.
Rory McIlroy goes in as the most likely winner with bookmakers who have the British star as 11/2 (Betfair) favourite while last year’s winner, Jason Day, leads the chasing pack at a market best price 8/1, also with Betfair. Considering Day won with a hugely impressive final tally of 22 under-par, which would have been good enough to win any of the previous four renewals, he’s sure to prove popular in the betting ring.
As is the norm, I’m looking for a bit more ‘bang for my buck’ and will cast my eye further down the pecking order in an attempt to pick out a nice price with ambition. That pick will be 2013 champion Zach Johnson.
Johnson seems to have been written off by the odds compilers but when he bagged the prize money here three years ago it was under similar circumstances, starting at massive odds but he didn’t let that deter him. The 40-year-old American carded a respectable 16-under on that occasion and a similar effort would certainly send him close again. He’s proven time and again that it’s never wise to put a line through his name before a ball has been hit.
Johnson’s power off the starting block will be key to any success here as the course is one of the longest top players will encounter this season, meaning a powerful swing is a must in your selections. It’s not all hit-and-hope for Zach however as his proven ability to keep the numbers down on the par fives will also be crucial and if he does that we could have a real good price on our hands come the business end of proceedings.
Bet365 make our pick a bulky 100/1 outsider but I’m more than happy to side with last year’s Open Championship winner. Each-way players get 1/4 the odds a place 1-2-3-4-5 across the board.
